Prodrive Teams Up With Mclaren
There have been whisperings and rumors all year that David Richards will be purchasing cars from Mclaren to use on his Prodrive Formula 1 team. Richards had been keeping quiet about the matter, even though everyone had already known because of all the rumors, but has know decided to make it official.
David Richards says he is close to finalizing a deal. “McLaren is one of three possible options for us, but they are closest,” Richards tells The Times newspaper. “We will not be able to make an announcement until next month but talks are progressing very well.”
The move by Richards to use customer cars, which will be allowed under the 2008 rules, is expected to save him almost $300-million in design and development costs.
Several other team bosses, notably Colin Kolles of Spyker and Frank Williams of Williams F1, are opposed to the customer car plan. Spyker has launched legal action against both Toro Rosso and Super Aguri, claiming that their 2007 cars violate the current Concorde Agreement. As for drivers for Richards F1 team, expect McLaren test driver Pedro de la Rosa and McLaren protege Gary Paffett to benefit from the Prodrive association with the Woking-based team.
There are many traditionalists that are angered by this movie from Richards, but he is taking it in stride. The fact that he isn’t breaking any rules should be enough for them.
