Diesel has been around for many years and has improved year by year. The only thing downfall to it is that it still only runs on diesel and diesel is hard to find. Not many people know the solution, except Mercedes. They have created a brand new powertrain concept called the DiesOtto.

Mercedes has been working on the concept for a couple of years now and has only just finished the prototype. The DiesOtto concept runs on regular unleaded gasoline instead of diesel, but it still has the benefits that a diesel engine offers. The prototype is a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that uses direct injection, variable compression, turbocharging and something they call “controlled auto ignition” to deliver 238 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, with a claimed return of “less than 6 liters per 100 kilometers”, which translates to 39.2 mpg.

The numbers are impressive, especially when they refer to an SUV vehicle not a small car. Even though Mercedes is hopeful that this concept will take off they have not given us an idea on when they will be producing and marketing it.
